In the Ether

The Coen brothers are going to film an adaptation of Charles Portis’ True Grit. Unlike the John Wayne version, this one will more faithfully follow the perspective of 14-year-old Mattie Ross. Can’t wait. . . . Take a look at an early candidate for Best Book Cover of 2009, Postcards of Lost Royals. . . . Also in the world of covers, both The Book Design Review and the Caustic Cover Critic take note of the visual work being done by Harper Perennial. . . . This list of the best coffee scenes in literature manages not to mention Mark Helprin’s Memoir From Antproof Case. The protagonist of Helprin’s novel has a highly detailed (and often hilarious) hatred for the drink. (He tells us, “Coffee has conquered the world; my only option is to harry it until I die.”)
