Great(ly Bad) Moments in Book Design

On Wednesday, Nov. 18, comedian Patrick Borelli is putting on a show called “You Should Judge a Book By Its Cover” at the UCB Theatre in New York. Borelli will be sharing and discussing (making fun of) 30 of the craziest book covers he’s come across. (You can make reservations here.) He also interviewed a trio of terrific designers — Steven Heller, Chip Kidd and Rodrigo Corral — and videos of those conversations will be shown throughout the night. Here’s one of them (semi-safe for work, depending on your workplace’s policy about scatological humor):

  1. [...] The Second Pass links to an upcoming show at the UCB Theater in New York called “You Should Judge a Book By Its Cover.”  The show, put on by comedian Patrick Borelli, will critique the 30 worst book covers of all time.  It sounds like fun.  As a bonus, Borelli made a short video featuring three designers discussing their craft and looking at a few jackets.  It’s good viewing, if for no other reason than to hear Chip Kidd talk.  He’s very funny. I think that most people would not agree that have ever done it, but it is a common practice for people to judge a book by its cover. I do not see anything wrong with it, the first impression in buying a book is what is count I would say most of the time. One may not like the cover of the book, but if the content is valuable that person would buy the book read it and put in the lowest shelf of his/her library.
I applaud a show like that because people would learn a lot from it. I anticipate this show is going to be very informative and funny. There are innocuous details that people do not pay attention to that are sometimes important in making decision when buying a book. I hope that the producer includes little trick in helping buyers to spot crappy books.
